What this site stores in your browser and asks of other services, and the choices you have over it. This policy sits alongside our privacy policy.
1. What cookies are
A cookie is a small text file that a website asks your browser to store. Cookies let a site remember your actions and preferences over time. In this policy we use the word cookies to also cover similar technologies, such as the local storage in your browser, which we use to remember your cookie choices.
We keep the use of these technologies to a minimum. The site runs on a small set of essential cookies, and everything else, including analytics, is off until you choose to allow it. We do not use advertising cookies or advertising trackers of any kind.
2. Your choices
When you first visit, a short notice asks whether you are happy for us to use non-essential cookies, functional and analytics, in addition to the essential ones. You can accept all, keep to essential only, or open the preferences panel to choose category by category. There are no pre-ticked boxes, and choosing essential only is as easy as accepting all.
You can revisit these choices whenever you like using the Cookies button in the bottom-right corner of any page, or the button below. We treat your choice as valid for about thirteen months, after which we ask again.
3. The categories we use
We group cookies into three categories.
- Essential. Needed for the site to work and to stay secure. These are always on and cannot be switched off, because the site cannot function without them.
- Functional. Power helpful features such as our interactive maps and address suggestions. Off until you allow them.
- Analytics. Help us understand how the site is used, through Google Analytics. Off until you allow them, and never used for advertising.
The tables below list what falls into each category, its purpose and how long it lasts.
4. Essential cookies
These are strictly necessary, so they do not require consent. They remember your cookie choices, help keep our forms secure and, for our own staff only, hold the admin sign-in.

5. Functional cookies
Functional features improve your experience but are not essential, so we load them only once you allow this category. Until then, the interactive maps show a neutral placeholder with a button to enable them.

6. Analytics cookies
With your consent we use Google Analytics to understand how the site is used, so we can improve it. Nothing loads and no analytics cookie is set until you allow this category, IP addresses are anonymised, and withdrawing your consent stops it from your next page. We do not use advertising cookies or pixels of any kind.

7. Refusing or withdrawing consent
You are free to refuse non-essential cookies, and to change your mind at any time. Because functional features stay off until you allow them, declining simply leaves the site running on essential cookies alone.
Using our preferences panel. Open it with the Cookies button in the bottom-right corner of any page, or the Manage cookie preferences button in section 2, then switch functional cookies on or off and save.
Using your browser. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies and clear stored data through their settings. If you delete our stored choice, we will ask again on your next visit. Please note that blocking essential cookies may stop parts of the site from working. 8. Links to other websites
Our pages may link to other websites, such as map data providers and our social media profiles. Those sites set their own cookies and are governed by their own policies. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of other websites, so we encourage you to read their cookie and privacy notices.
9. International transfers of personal data
Some of the services above may process limited personal data, such as your IP address, on servers outside the United Kingdom. This can happen, for example, when your browser requests map tiles from OpenFreeMap, when a form is checked by Cloudflare, or when Google Analytics runs with your consent.
Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we rely on the safeguards set out in Article 44 and the following articles of the UK GDPR. In practice that means transfers are made to countries covered by UK adequacy regulations, or are protected by appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or the International Data Transfer Agreement. 10. Changes and contact
We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes to the site or the law. The version on this page is the current one, and we review it at least once a year.
